As cars get faster and more capable, the tyres need to keep pace. After all, the only thing connecting your car to the road is four pieces of rubber.
Michelin’s expertise in automotive tyres has been recognised by industry experts with the French brand winning the Tyre Manufacturer of the Year award at the annual Tyre Technology Expo in Hanover earlier this week.
It was the second consecutive year Michelin has been handed this honour, a first in the award’s 12 year history. The judging panel praised Michelin’s efforts to make more accessible, efficient and sustainable tyres.
But that wasn’t the only prize Michelin received at the Expo. The company’s revolutionary ‘airless’ tyre prototype, the Uptis, was recognized with the Tyre Technology 2020 Innovation Award.
The advanced design of Uptisuses a unique structure of recycled materials to create a tyre and wheel package that is incapable of getting a puncture – because it doesn’t rely on air. Michelin is targeting commercial passenger vehicle use by 2024.
“It is a great honor for us to receive the Tyre Manufacturer of the Year Award for the second year in a row, a first in the history of these awards,” said Florent Menegaux, CEO of the Michelin Group. “Combined with the Innovation Award for Uptis, these two prestigious titles reward the Group’s strategic directions. This is obviously a source of immense pride for us all at Michelin, but also a clear demonstration of the relevance of the action plans we have made, both in terms of innovation and sustainable mobility.”
