Mercedes unveils EV with record-breaking range

Mercedes-Benz may have created the ultimate electric vehicle for Australia – one that can travel our vast distances.

The new Vision EQXX concept was unveiled overnight and the sleek, aerodynamic sedan boasts a claimed range of 1000km, far more than any current EV available on the market. Most EVs have a range between 400-500km, which has led to many EV-sceptics questioning the value of electric cars in a country like Australia.

With a range of 1000km, the Vision EQXX would be able to drive between Sydney and Brisbane without the need to recharge.

“The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX is how we imagine the future of electric cars,” said Ola Källenius, Mercedes-Benz chairman. “Just one-and-a-half years ago, we started this project leading to the most efficient Mercedes-Benz ever built – with an outstanding energy consumption of less than 10 kWh per 100 kilometres. It has a range of more than 1,000 kilometres on a single charge using a battery that would fit even into a compact vehicle.”

The concept previews the German giant’s new EV architecture and battery technology which is set to enter production in 2024. The EQXX is reportedly approximately the same size as a C-Class sedan, raising the possibility that it will evolve into a future production car to sit alongside the upcoming new petrol-powered C-Class.

To develop this ground-breaking battery technology Mercedes turned to the engineers at its Formula 1 and Formula E teams, explained Markus Schäfer, the company’s chief technology officer.

“Vision EQXX has seen the best minds from our R&D centres work together with engineers from our Formula 1 and Formula E programmes,” Schäfer said. “They are proving that innovations from motorsport – where powertrains are already highly electrified – have immediate relevance for road car development. We are challenging current development processes with innovative spirit and outside-the-box thinking. This truly is the way forward.”
