Double trouble: Subaru adds WRX Sportswagon to local line-up

Subaru already had performance car fans excited by the arrival of the new generation WRX, but now there’s another reason to be looking forward to 2022 – the WRX Sportswagon.

The Japanese brand confirmed overnight the addition of a more practical body-style to the WRX range, but still with the same rally-bred performance. The WRX Sportswagon effectively replaces the Levorg in the line-up, but instead of offering different powertrains to the WRX sedan, the new Sportswagon will be mechanically matching.

That means a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged boxer engine, making 202kW of power and 350Nm of torque. However, it will only be available with Subaru’s ‘eight-speed performance transmission’ – which is actually a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with eight ‘stepped gears’ – missing out on the six-speed manual in the WRX.

It’s built on the same Subaru Global Platform as the WRX sedan with all-wheel drive. It also features matching styling, as well as 18-inch alloy wheels and the same suite of active safety in the brand’s ‘EyeSight’ package.
