Turning a dream into a reality
It has been a life-long dream for Scott Jones to run his own Sprintcar team, and it might have taken him close to 40 years to turn his dream into a reality, but he is now the owner of one of Australia’s newest Sprintcar teams: Bohud Racing.
After developing a passion for Sprintcar racing from a young age, where his dad Paul and several of his uncles were heavily involved with Sprintcars as drivers, car owners and crew members, Jones has spent the past 20 or so years helping various Sprintcar teams as a pit crew member, such as Garry Rush.
Fast forward to last year, Jones began piecing together his own Sprintcar racing team, and it was the beginning of the Bohud Racing team.
You see with Jones, he doesn’t do things by halves, and he went out and purchased top flight equipment in the form of Triple X cars that are coupled with KRE Race Engines prepared 410ci engines, and he added a state-of-the-art semi-trailer transporter.
“I’ve been around Sprintcar racing my whole life and I have always harboured the desire to start up my own Sprintcar team, and I managed to do that and I’m really enjoying it so far,” explained the 40-year-old Jones, who is the proprietor of Bohud Transport in the Wollongong, NSW suburb of Unanderra.
“How starting up my own Sprintcar team came about was with my business going quite well, I was now in a position to be able to afford to it properly and I’m the type of guy who if I’m going to do something then I’ll do it properly from the beginning.”
Starting up a new Sprintcar team certainly comes with its fair share of challenges, and for Jones, he had all the equipment for a race team, but he still had to find a suitable driver, which came in the form of veteran racer Mark Blyton.
“My family and I have known Blyto (Mark Blyton) for many years now, and he was the driver I chose in order to help us set-up our team and get on our feet,” added Jones.
The long-term goal for the Bohud Racing team is to within the next 12 months go out and scout a young driver to steer the NS # 14 ARRMA Australia / Illawarra Truck Repairs & Spares supported Triple X car.
“The plans for our first season are to have Blyto (Mark Blyton) behind the wheel and then create an opportunity for a young driver to join our team the following season,” commented Jones, whose previous motorsport experience comes in the form of RC Racing, where he is a multiple Australian Title finalist and podium finisher.
“I’m really passionate about getting a young driver into our team and for us to grow together, but the short-term goal for our team is to get through our first season and then go from there.”
The plans for Bohud Racing’s first season in Sprintcars are to be based at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Speedway. The newly built 80-million-dollar facility is just under a two-hour drive in the team’s transporter from their home base of Unanderra.
So far in the 2022-23 season, Bohud Racing and Blyton have made two appearances together at Eastern Creek Speedway and performed strongly, with Blyton having qualified directly into both feature races and finished.
Apart from team owner Scott Jones and team driver Mark Blyton, Bohud Racing is made up of Scott’s dad Paul along with the Swanies (David and his twin sons Tim and Brett), Matt and Greg. The team is also complemented by veteran Sprintcar mechanic John Barrett who is part of the team as an advisor to help steer them during their early stages.
The next appearance for the Bohud Racing team is going to be at Eastern Creek Speedway this Saturday night (November 26).
