The Kerrick Sports Sedan Series has introduced a new concept which allows competitors the chance to compete as ‘state of origin’ entrants in the national Series at two rounds across the year, one of which must be held in their home state.

The concept allows racers who may otherwise not have the time or resources to compete in the full Series to compete in a national-level racing competition, with two State of Origin entries received for this weekend’s Winton Motor Raceway event (13-15 June).

One of those who has answered the call is 37-year-old Warragul racer Shane Ryding.

Ryding will take to Winton Motor Raceway this weekend in a Mazda Rx7 space frame car powered by a Buick V6 engine with a Nascar Gear Box. The racer was completely designed and built in-house at his own Inspired Race Developments business.

“I am a huge fan of Winton Motor Raceway for both the track and its management, who are fantastic to deal with,” said Ryding, the won the 2012 2501-4000c Victorian Sports Sedan Championship in his debut sports sedan year.

“Racing on the Winton track at a fast pace is hard, but it is a heap of fun!

“It might be my home track but I don’t think I will have much of a home ground advantage as some of the drivers in the Kerrick Sports Sedan Series are the best Sports Sedan drivers in the country, I did my first race in the Series at Phillip Island in 2012 and it was really great.

“I was really pleased to be able to enter in this round of the Series and also hopefully the Phillip Island round later in the year thanks to the State of Origin concept – it is a fantastic way to initiate state-level sports sedan cars into the national series so I am really thankful to the Series for getting it going.

“I would like to thank my sponsors and supporters Liquid Clothing Company, M Style Hair and Beauty, Harvest Motorsport, Pakenham Tyres & More and Riverside Racegear, without them I wouldn’t be able to go racing!”

The Kerrick Sports Sedan Series is one of the most exciting on the annual Shannons Australian Motor Racing Nationals calendar, pitting a range of ‘wild and winged’ modified sports sedans and trans-ams against each other. Part of The Nationals since its inception in 2006, the Kerrick Sports Sedans represent the fastest tin-tops in Australia and in some cases, the fastest outright cars on a number of national circuits. In 2014, the Kerrick Sports Sedan Series will contest five national circuit racing events across four states:

  • Round One – 25-27 April, Mallala Motorsport Park
  • Round Two – 13-15 June, Winton Motor Raceway
  • Round Three – 8-10 August, Queensland Raceway
  • Round Four – 19-21 September, Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit
  • Round Five – 17-19 October, Wakefield Park Motor Raceway
