Scott Pye has rocketed to second position in the opening race of the Winton SuperSprint Virgin Australia Supercars event in the Hot Wheels™ Car Care Products backed Walkinshaw Andretti United Holden.
After qualifying fifth, Pye used superior grip and better Dunlop rubber after pitstops to edge his way into the top four and then making a dynamic restart after a Safety Car with eight laps to go, the South Australian followed eventual winner, Rick Kelly to the head of the field.
Over the final laps, withstanding a challenge from Shane van Gisbergen, Pye charged the rear of the Kelly car however wasn’t able to get into a position to get into the race lead.
The podium continues Pye’s outstanding run in season 2018 and moves him back into the top six of the Championship.
Hot Wheels™ Car Care Products ambassador, James Courtney also moved his way forward after starting 13th.
Following a hospital visit last night after a virus kept him out of the car yesterday, Courtney pushed ahead during the race and in the latter stages was able to approach the top 10.
He eventually moved into ninth position at the completion of the race, which now places him seventh in the Championship right behind Pye.
Tomorrow, the Hot Wheels™ Car Care Products-backed Mobil 1 Boost Mobile Racing team will be back at it with a qualifying session and the 14th race of what has been an epic season over 67 laps at 1:45pm local time.
