South Australian racer George Gutierrez has exceeded his own expectations by finishing on the podium at the final round of the Toyota 86 Racing Series on the streets of Newcastle, supporting the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship title decider. 
A third place in the second race, along with two fourth-place results, not only ensured that the young driver from Adelaide finished in the top three for the round but also moved up to seventh in the championship standings. Well ahead of his personal goal after coming into the last round just outside of the top ten.
“I don’t its sort sunk in yet. We’ve got the trophy, we’ve got the cheque. But I don’t think it’ll sink in properly until I get home.” said Gutierrez.
“That second race I was really pushing hard for second place, but I think we over pressured the tyres and I needed to back off there at the end. But very happy to get my personal best result in the series.”
“It’s a massive weight off my shoulders to get a decent result and really prove what we’re capable of. We’ve been fast all year, but now we have a trophy that shows those who have doubted us that we are capable of getting results.”
“It’s a big relief. I’m really happy about that.”
Gutierrez briefly reflected on the 2019 season upon being presented the “Best fits the values of the Toyota Way” award, at the end of season presentation dinner, for best demonstrating the Toyota brand’s two core key values throughout the year, continuous improvement and respect for people.
“The podium was definitely a highlight of the year.” Gutierrez continued.
“We finished up seventh, took home a couple of prizes and that’s a great way to wrap up a massive year.”
