Double points haul for Corbett

With double points on offer during last Saturday night’s WA V8 Dirt Modified Title at Kalgoorlie International Speedway, which was run in conjunction with the penultimate 5 Star Dirt Series round, there was no better time for Chris Corbett to clinch top honours.

Sitting fifth in the 5 Star Dirt Series point standings heading into the event, Corbett, who was one of only two interstaters to compete in the WA Title, the other of which was his older brother Dale Corbett, and the decision to travel west and guest driver the Marley Weller-owned Troyer car certainly proved to be a fruitful one.

Earning the pole position start for the 25-lap WA Title-deciding feature race by virtue of picking up a pair of heat-race wins earlier in the nights, Corbett made the most of his start to move into the early lead. However, he didn’t have it all his own way from there.

Mounting on the pressure was second-placed Travis Kennedy, who briefly managed to pip the leader on lap 15 but wasn’t quite able to make the move stick, slipping back to second behind eventual winner Corbett, whose victory marked the first title win of his V8 Dirt Modified career. It was a solid race from Kris Falconbridge, who settled into third place in the early stages of the distance, remaining there through to the fall of the chequered flag, while Vin Smith, who was the highest finishing Sportsman competitor, and Michael Harris rounded out the top-five finishers.

The night ended in disappointing fashion for Mathew Kennedy and Brad Cooper, both of whom retired to the infield midway through the feature race. Dale Corbett had a night to forget after making the long trip from New South Wales to Kalgoorlie. After experiencing a brake issue in his third and final heat race, Dale was unable to start the feature race.

The only driver to beat Chris Corbett in the heat races was Kennedy, who picked up the first of the three wins, with Corbett taking out the remaining two.

The seventh and final 5 Star Dirt Series round is set to take place on the Saturday night of April 27 at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway in Queensland.
