Brownsey’s American adventure

Next month, AMCA Nationals driver and noted photographer Declan Brownsey is set to embark on an American racing campaign, which will see him contest over a dozen race meetings in U.M.P. Modifieds in support of the prestigious Late Model Hell Tour.

Running for car owner Brian Deavers, the expat New Zealander, who now resides in the town of Ningi in the Moreton Bay region of Queensland, will be based in Bloomington, Illinois for the duration of his month-long trip, while travelling across three different states to contest each of his 14 scheduled race meetings.

No stranger to America, Brownsey’s first venture to the home of the brave took place in 2015 when he spent six months crewing for Late Model driver Jason Feger, picking up invaluable experience along the way. This visit also saw Brownsey make his American racing debut via the Hornets class, where he managed to pick up an A main win at Farmer City Speedway, a track he is once again set to visit come July 5.

Returning to America in 2017, the 27-year-old contested a single race meeting aboard a U.M.P. Modified, which was the catalyst for his introduction to Deavers; an introduction that has since proven to be mutually beneficial.

“I can’t express how appreciative I am of the opportunity Brian is giving me to race his car,” states Brownsey, who, in addition to his AMCA Nationals racing, dabbles in National 4s.

“To say that I’m excited would be a massive understatement. The Hell Tour is the biggest competition that there is for Late Models, so to be supporting several rounds of the tour is pretty amazing.

“Overall, the goal is to just to qualify for some A mains. To do that amongst such strong competition, who are a lot more experienced in these cars and on these tracks than myself, would be an achievement in itself.”

Brownsey would like to thank the following sponsors for helping to make his American racing trip a possibility:
Varsitee Screenprinting

Bryke Racing
