Chris Jewell has been confirmed as the on-track voice of V8 Supercars for 2010.
Jewell took on the role this year, replacing Paul Marinelli who was the series caller in 2008. Before that, Barry Oliver had been the V8’s main caller for 15 consecutive years.
Jewell told Speedcafe that he has the “best seat in the house.”
“I’ve got a view out the window, a TV screen, a timing screen, and other than the corporate suites where you might be able to enjoy a cool beverage, it’s the dream spot,” he said.
“I certainly enjoy getting my motor racing fix with all of that information at my disposal.
“Further to that, I just enjoy working in and around the V8 Supercar community – watching champions dominate, new drivers develop and surprises being thrown up in what is an ever changing sport.
“There’s a great deal of satisfaction in being able to do it, and also, being able to provide a spin on the coverage that isn’t just words. It’s words with some insight.
“Having worked in the sport up close and personal for a long time in a number of different capacities – from team management, driving, sponsorship, PR, now I get to talk about it, hopefully I can enlighten at least one of the fans that pay to be there! “
Besides Jewell’s role as series commentator, he runs his own business (Velocity Management Group) where he manages the careers aspiring young race drivers, plus sponsorship and promotion work.
One of Jewell’s first ‘finds’ as a manager was Jason Bright. The pair met when Bright was 18, and Jewell has been involved with the 1998 Bathurst winner on a number of different levels since.
