WORLD WRAP: Mawson extends German F4 lead

Joey Mawson scored two podium finishes at the Red Bull Ring

Joey Mawson scored two podium finishes at the Red Bull Ring

Joey Mawson has extended his ADAC German Formula 4 Championship lead after recording his sixth win of the season at the Red Bull Ring.

The rising Australian star began the weekend with an impressive drive to fourth having started from 11th on the grid.

Mawson secured pole position in qualifying but a 10 place grid penalty carried over from a clash with a rival at the previous round saw him demoted to 11th position.

The second heat saw the Sydney racer claim a comfortable win over Mike-David Ortmann and Nicklas Nielsen.

Mawson finished third in the final race behind Simo Laaksonen and title rival Mick Schumacher, who endured a difficult weekend following a lacklustre run in qualifying.

The young Aussie has now opened up a 46 point lead over Schumacher in the title race.

“Points wise it was really good with a win in Race Two and also a podium in the final race,” said Mawson.

“Mick struck a bit of trouble in qualifying and I was able to make the most of the opportunity and extend the lead in the championship.

“We had a strong car all weekend, again the Van Amersfoort guys did a fantastic job to give me the best possible chance of a great result.

“It is very pleasing to be able to reward them with a couple of podiums.”

The championship moves to Germany’s Nurburgring from August 5-7.

IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship

Renger van der Zande and Alex Popow secured another IMSA victory for Starworks Motorsport in the Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock.

The pair guided the #8 Oreca FLM09 from the PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports machine driven by Tom Kimber-Smith and Robert Alon in the 2:40m race.

Kyle Marcelli and James French finished a lap down in third position in their #38 Performance Tech Oreca FLM09 machine.

In the GTLM class, Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner provided Corvette with a landmark 100th victory.

The pair guided the #4 Corvette C7.R to the class win ahead of the #3 Corvette driven by Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen.

The Ganassi-run Ford GT of Australian Ryan Briscoe and Richard Westbrook claimed third.

GTD class honours were taken by Andy Lally and John Potter in the Magnus Racing Audi R8 LMS.

Lally produced a slashing drive to move up the order in the closing stages to beat another Audi R8 driven by Robin Liddell and Andrew Davis.

The next round is scheduled for Road America from August 5-7.

Prema Powerteam star Pierre Gasly capitalised on his pole position to take victory in the 36-lap feature race at the Hungaroring.

Antonio Giovinazzi settled for second, 1.3s behind his team-mate while Russian Sergey Sirotkin won a battle for third place.

In the second 28-lap race, Sirotkin capped a solid weekend by claiming his first win of the season.

The ART GP driver beat Racing Engineering pair Jordan King and Norman Nato.

Kiwi Mitch Evans finished fifth in the sprint race after the Pertamina Campos driver crossed the line 10th in the feature.

The battle at the top of the standings sees Gasly hold a nine point lead on 107 from Giovinazzi with Marciello next on 85.

GP2 moves to Hockenheim next from July 29-31.

GP3 Series

Alexander Albon has claimed a slender lead in the points race after his triumph in the second heat.

Albon (ART Grand Prix) beat Arjun Maini (Jenzer Motorsports) by more than three seconds to move to 107 points on the table, 3 markers ahead of third place finisher Charles Leclerc (ART GP).

Arden’s Jack Aitken was docked five seconds for causing a collision with Ralph Boschung at Turn 14 which saw him drop from fourth to be classified in sixth.

The first race saw Matt Parry race to his maiden win, 3.2s clear of Trident’s Antonio Fuoco with Jake Dennis (Arden) third in the 22-lap affair.

The next round is scheduled for Hockenheim from July 29-31.

Formula V8 3.5

Roy Nissany stepped up his Formula V8 3.5 title bid by claiming an impressive double victory at Silverstone.

The Israeli driver survived a high speed clash with early race leader Egor Orudzhev in the final stages of the race.

Orudzhev turned in on Nissany at Stowe on lap 16 which sent the pair spinning.

Luckily the duo had a 10 second margin over the field which allowed Nissany (Lotus) to recover to take a maiden victory in the series.

Pole-sitter Matthieu Vaxiviere came through to finish second while fellow Lotus runner Rene Binder claimed third.

Nissany backed up his victory with a commanding performance in the second heat that saw him take the flag with a 17s margin over Binder and Orudzhev.

Tom Dillmann leads the championship standings by 32 points over Nissany following two fourth place finishes.

The series heads to the Red Bull Ring from September 10-11.
