Andre Heimgartner and David Reynolds were unperturbed by the wet weather at the Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint, both starring in Sunday morning’s qualifying.

The Kelly Grove Racing duo both qualified inside the top 10 for Race 4 and Race 5 of the Repco Supercars Championship in tricky conditions.

Heimgartner of Ned Racing was a standout, qualifying fifth for both races while Penrite Racing’s Reynolds was ninth and fourth fastest across the two 10-minute sessions.

For lead qualifier Reynolds, it was a trying first session as he battled visibility issues.

“The first session I literally fogged up,” said Reynolds.

“I could see half my screen and I was trying to duck to see where I was going and it wasn’t very nice. It got better but it’s still not perfect.

“Like anytime you do a wet session or race at Sandown, it’s a tough session because the track is so hard to drive, there’s so many different surfaces, it’s just shit out there to be frank.”

Nevertheless, the 35-year-old was pleased to make gains from the first to the second qualifying despite the short turnaround between sessions.

“It was really good,” he said.

“Ended up ninth and then fourth, so we made improvements session to session and yeah it was much better.”

Team-mate Heimgartner drove with confidence despite using a dry set-up on his Ford Mustang.

“Really good obviously getting both cars inside the top five in the last one which was really good for the team, really positive,” said Heimgartner.

“It will be interesting, the car was pretty comfortable in that, I was able to push it.

“At the end of that last session there the tyres were overpressured. We went on the same tyres we went out on in the first qualifying, worked at the start, but not at the end of the session when we really needed it.

“We actually just went to the dry set-up that we had earlier in the weekend that was too soft for the dry, so we sort of knew it was an alright balance.”

Race 4 of the season gets underway at 13:30 local time (AEDT).
