Fernando Alonso has been discharged from hospital after undergoing surgery for a fractured jaw.

The two-time Formula 1 champion was hit while riding his bike in Switzerland last Thursday and taken to hospital, never losing consciousness.

The Alpine F1 Team has now announced the Spaniard has been discharged from hospital and will continue his recovery at home.

The incident comes almost exactly a month out from pre-season testing at Bahrain International Circuit.

“After a period of 48 hours observation at hospital in Switzerland, Fernando Alonso has now been discharged to continue his recovery at home,” the team said in a statement.

“He will now have a short period of complete rest before progressively resuming training to undertake preparation for the start of the season.

“As always, thank you for your best wishes for Fernando’s recovery.”

Alonso makes his return to F1 after a two-year hiatus from the championship.

The Spaniard has recently raced in the FIA World Endurance Championship, winning it and the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Toyota.

Alonso has 32 grand prix wins from 311 starts.

The forthcoming F1 season begins late next month, following pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit from March 12-14.

Alpine hasn’t yet confirmed when it will reveal its A521, the only team thus far to show off their car being that of McLaren.
