FIA not planning changes after Peroni crash

The FIA will not make immediate changes without understanding the cause of Alex Peroni’s frightening Formula 3 crash in Monza.

The Australian suffered a terrifying airborne crash after contacting a kerb on the outside of the Parabolica in the closing stages of Saturday’s race.

It saw the Campos Racing driver catapulted into the air, landing upside down on the tyre barrier before bouncing back onto the undertray where the car came to rest.

Peroni climbed free and walked away before being diagnosed with concussion and a fractured D6 vertebrae.

The Tasmanian was taken to the nearby Ospedale San Gerardo of Monza for further checks, where his management told he remains in good spirits.

Following the incident the FIA removed the offending kerb but will await the outcome of a forensic investigation before taking any further action.

“It was a freak incident, is the best way to put it, even when you look at it now,” said F1 race director Michael Masi.

“From our end we will continue looking at everything, various solutions, what they are, and we will evolve when we find other better things in different areas, different circumstances, and different corners obviously – and if there are different profiles of corners and different speeds.

“From my understanding that (kerb) has been there at least two or three years.

“It is one of those freak ones; we will look at them generally and go from there.”

Masi also stated that there are no changes set to be made to the Marina Bay circuit in Singapore, which Formula 1 visits next, suggesting it would be wrong to make sweeping changes on the back of Peroni’s crash.

“Everything for Singapore, and I was there prior to Belgium, looks to be coming along quite well,” he explained.

“I think we will look at each case on its merits, have a look at it, see what various simulations we come back with and go from there.

“Let’s remember that all of these circuits have an FIA Grade 1 licence, that are all homologated in the manner in which they are, with all the inherent safety installations, like kerbs, installation behind kerbs and what it may be.

“They are all inspected in accordance with our rigorous regime.

“It would be naive to say there is a knee jerk to anything like that (crash).”
