Formula E will race at an all-new circuit when the championship reaches the Santiago ePrix for the third round of the 2018/19 season.

Having previously competed in Forestal Park, the event is set to move to a new location in O’Higgins Park in the centre of the Chilean capital.

Santiago’s place on the Formula E calendar had been thrown in doubt when the previous location faced opposition from local residents, who were unhappy that roads through the park were closed.

The new venue, which still requires FIA homologation, will see a 14-turn circuit set up around the Movistar Arena.

“Now we’re changing the location, we learned and we listened to the neighbours – we’re talking with them to mitigate the negative externalities that means organising this event inside Parque O’Higgins,” said Felipe Alessandri, Mayor of Santiago.

“We’re very happy because Formula E returns to Chile in January,” added Pauline Kantor, Minister of Sport.

“It’s great news for all, because it means that we’re up to the task as a country to organise big events, which also gives us a lot of visibility and makes Chile shine outside.

“It’s very good news not only in sports, but also for tourism – it means that we can project our country to all parts of the world.”

Chile made its first appearance on the Formula E calendar last season, a race won by Jean-Eric Vergne.

The Santiago ePrix is set to be held on January 26, the first of two consecutive events in the Americas, with Mexico City to follow on February 17.
