Jaxon Evans has ended the Porsche Wilson Security Carrera Cup Australia practice session fastest in a session that saw slippery conditions improve throughout.

A damp circuit welcomed drivers, but dried enough to see Evans cut almost 20 seconds off the times that were set at the start of the 50-minute session.

Jordan Love set an opening benchmark of just 2:28.218s as the session got going with times falling, Moffat banking a 2:25.180s after a quarter of an hour into the session.

With just under half an hour remaining, the leading drivers made the switch to dry weather tyres.

Peter Major moved his way to the top on 2:23.397s, a time that proved some three seconds faster than those who’d made the switch to slicks.

Conditions though continued to improve, with Evans taking more than 9 seconds off the time set by Major, with a 2:14.312s.

It was the precursor to a number of drivers who improved as the session ticked towards its conclusion, with Dale Wood sliding his way to the fastest time with 2:11.719s.

Wood was almost two seconds faster than the rest of the field before his brother, Glen Wood, recorded a 2:12.475s to post the second best time.

With a dry line having emerged, gains were being made up and down the field as they discovered the extra grip and grew in confidence.

Evans shaved three tenths off Wood’s earlier best, setting a 2:10.446s before improving on his very next lap to set the clock at 2:09.714s with little more than half a minute left in the session.

It was an a comparatively uneventful session despite the conditions, with Adam Garwood running long at the Chase, and David Wall taking to the escape road at Murray’s Corner the only real incidents – though Moffat brushed the wall at the exit of Forrest’s Elbow midway through the session.

Behind Evans was David Wall, a tenth off the session’s best, followed by Love, Dale Wood, and Michael Almond, while Stephen Grove was the leading Pro-Am competitor in 11th.

Carrera Cup is back on track at 1645 for its 30-minute qualifying session.
