Kanaan fastest in final Indy 500 practice

Tony Kanaan

Tony Kanaan has gone quickest in the final practice session on Carb Day in Indianapolis.

Kanaan lapped the speedway at a best time of 39.5099s (227.791mph, 366.594km/h) in the #14 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet, a comfortable margin ahead of next-fastest Scott Dixon.

Dixon’s quickest in the #9 Chip Ganassi Honda was 39.8787s (225.684mph, 363.203km/h), with Marco Andretti (#98 Andretti-Herta w/ Curb-Agajanian Honda), Sebastien Bourdais (#18 DCR w/ Vasser-Sullivan), and Charlie Kimball (#23 Carlin Chevrolet) rounding out the top five.

Last year’s winner Takuma Sato (#30 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Honda) was sixth, Will Power (#12 Team Penske Chevrolet) seventh, James Davison (#33 Foyt w/ Byrd-Hollinger-Belardi Chevrolet) 13th, and pole-sitter Ed Carpenter (#20 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet) 14th.

The hour-long session, run in relatively warm conditions which are expected to be repeated in Sunday’s race, ran largely without incident.

Danica Patrick’s #13 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet did suffer an electrical issue which restricted her running, although she still managed to be eighth at day’s end.

The 2018 Indianapolis 500 starts on Monday at 0219 AEST.
