Ricciardo labels Verstappen an ‘amateur’ after clash

Daniel Ricciardo runs wide following contact with Max Verstappen

Daniel Ricciardo has hit out at his Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen after the pair collided on the opening lap of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Verstappen had initially made the better getaway, only to find his progress blocked on the exit of the opening corner before sliding into the side of Ricciardo at turn two.

The resulting damage ended the Australian’s race, leaving Ricciardo fuming.

“That was amateur, to say the least,” said Ricciardo.

“It’s not like he was trying to pass, there was no room, Valtteri (Bottas) was in front I was on the outside, there was no room.”

Stewards immediately investigated the incident and slapped Verstappen with a 10 second penalty to be taken at his first pit stop.

However,  it was no consolation to Ricciardo who found himself out of the Hungarian Grand Prix for the first time in his career.

“I don’t think he likes obviously when a team-mate gets in front of him,” Ricciardo suggested of Verstappen.

“I honestly don’t think it’s trying too hard. I don’t think there’s an excuse for it.

“Obviously he tried the outside at turn one, it didn’t work,” he added.

“He got the line taken away from him at the exit, and all of a sudden what looks like a good start is then a bad start and he sees me go past, and it’s like, I’ve got to fix this and it’s oops, I’ve crashed.

“You’ve got the whole race to try and repair a mistake.

“The pass was never on. It wasn’t even a passing attempt, it was just a very poor mistake.”
