Preliminary track works to prepare the all-new Newcastle street circuit ahead of Supercars’ season finale are on schedule.

Preparations for the build of the 2.6km track began last month well in advance of the inaugural Coates Hire Newcastle 500 to be held from November 24-26.

Supercars agreed a five-year deal for Newcastle to host its final round in September last season.

Despite facing unrest from a group of city residents earlier this year, the circuit construction is now well underway, with the project on schedule and to budget.

Work is currently being carried out at number of areas located around the track layout, which is being overseen by Newcastle City Council and track constructors iEDM.

Underground work is currently underway on the first sector of the track at Watt Street, alongside preparations at Shortland Esplanade.

The pit and paddock areas at Wharf Road are being readied for structures, while the hairpin at Camp Shortland is gearing up for a new section of road to be laid.

The new piece of tarmac is due to be replaced with turf after each event following requests from the council.

This stage of the track build is set to be completed in September with the final stages, including the construction of pit buildings, corporate facilities and grandstands, to begin in October.

Speedcafe.com understands the cost for the entire track build is in the region of $20 million, with only small sections of the layout expected to be resurfaced.

Supercars has confirmed that Australian rock band Cold Chisel will be the headline act for its off track entertainment.
