Vinales flies in Phillip Island MotoGP test

Maverick Vinales

Yamaha star Maverick Vinales has turned the tables on Honda by topping the second day of the MotoGP pre-season test at Phillip Island.

Vinales was the only rider to dip under the 1:29s barrier when he finished with a 1:28.84s best.

First day fast man Marc Marquez finished .46s adrift of Vinales while Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) was third, a fraction behind the Spaniard.

The 23-year-old triple MotoGP champion Marquez had been plagued with a fever throughout the test.

There were encouraging signs for Aspar Ducati rider Alvaro Bautista who was fourth fastest after a fall on the opening day left him in 12th.

Andrea Dovizioso was the best of the factory Ducatis to be fifth ahead of Aprilia Team Gresini rider Aleix Espargaro.

Jonas Folger (Monster Yamaha Tech 3), Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha) and Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) was ninth.

Jack Miller was just under 1s off the top pace in another encouraging day for the Australia on the MARC VDS Honda to be 10th.

The second of MotoGP’s scheduled pre-tests concludes at the Victorian circuit tomorrow.
