Josef Newgarden has enjoyed a dream start with his new team by setting the fastest lap on the opening day of pre-season IndyCar testing at Phoenix.
Newgarden set a best of 190.12 mph (305.96 km/h) as the IndyCar field turned a total of 2638 laps at the 1.6km oval.
His former team boss, Ed Carpenter, clocked the second fastest on combined times with a 189.99 (305.75) best from the two sessions, the second of which was run under lights.
Newgarden has completed a perfect day as he suits up for the powerful Team Penske this season.
Marco Andretti was the fastest Honda-powered runner, finishing third overall with a 189.12 (304.35)
“I think we had a pretty good start to today,” Newgarden said.
“The car was really great off the truck, so we didn't have to do too much. We just got into our program and had a pretty easy start.”
Drivers running Chevrolet engines and aero kits locked down the top four spots in the first practice, while those equipped with Honda equipment claimed the first six positions in the night practice.
