Toyota has confirmed that Jose Maria Lopez will join the outfit as part of an expansion plan that will see it field three LMP1 machines for selected races.

Lopez joins the Toyota Gazoo Racing squad after winning the past three World Touring Car Championships for Citroen.

The 33-year-old will join Toyota incumbents Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi.

Toyota has confirmed that it will add a third TS050 Hybrid to its 2016 WEC campaign for Spa and the Le Mans 24 Hour.

“This is a dream come true for me and I can’t wait to get to the first race,” Lopez said.

“Mike and Kamui are both great team-mates; I will learn plenty from them I am sure.

“Driving an LMP1 car is very different compared to WTCC cars but I am enjoying this challenge.

“The power and grip of the TS050 Hybrid is incredible and Toyota’s hybrid technology is impressive. I am looking forward to my first experience of WEC and particularly Le Mans which is a very special race.”

The 2014 WEC title-winners Sebastien Buemi and Anthony Davidson will continue along with Kazuki Nakajima.

Stephane Sarrazin will be assigned to the lead driver role of the third machine however it has not yet been made public who his two team-mates will be.
