Evans takes Rennsport GT3CC clean sweep
Jaxon Evans added to McElrea Racing’s Rennsport joy with a trio of victories in the GT3 Cup Challenge.
Shadowing the domination of McElrea duo Matt Campbell and Geoff Emery in the Carrera Cup, Evans proved too good for all comers in the second division.
The youngster didn’t have it all his own way, however, with rival Hamish Hardeman leading for 22 of the 25 laps in the Sunday evening feature race.
After running side-by-side on several occasions, Evans was finally able to make a move stick at Turn 2 with three laps remaining.
“It was such a long race,” said Evans of a race that delivered his first GT3CC round victory and the series lead.
“Hamish got the car off the line and he made me work for it.
“It’s good to know we can race clean and fair against each other. It’s was awesome to come out on top.
“It’s an awesome result and I’m so happy to have my first round victory here at Rennsport, with all the Porsche’s and Carrera Cup on display.
“We’re looking forward to the next round already and hopefully we can come out on top by the end of it.”
Having finished second in all three races, Hardeman took encouragement from the weekend.
“After having the discussion with my team I need to work on my style a little bit to improve on the areas where I was lacking compared to Jaxon,” he said.
“But overall, we were spitting out the same lap times and I felt like I gained and learned across the weekend.
“I got more and more confidence as the weekend went on and we changed the car to suit my style.
“We’re going to Winton and will be trying to be in front of him at the next round.”
Porsche junior Jake Klarich completed the round podium in third after coming out on top in a Race 3 dice with Tim Miles.
Miles ultimately fell one point short of the weekend’s Elite Class win, which went to David Ryan.
Richard Gartner won Class B for the older model 911s ahead of opening round winner Daniel Stuttard.
The GT3 Cup Challenge continues at Winton on June 10-12.
