Melbourne will continue to host the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix until at least 2023, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has announced.

The new deal is a further extension of the current agreement that runs until 2020 and staves off talk that Sydney could poach the race.

Premier Andrews announced the agreement via his Facebook page, posting a brief message and video poking fun at the New South Wales Premier Mike Baird.

Baird’s apparent bid to steal the race from Melbourne was front-page news during this year’s Grand Prix weekend.

“I’m sorry Mike but the Australian Formula One Grand Prix is here to stay exactly where it belongs, in the great city of Melbourne,” said Andrews in the video post.

“The good news is that you and tens of thousands of others from NSW and right across Australia and indeed right across the world are more than welcome to come to Melbourne to be part of the great race.

“In fact, I’ll even shout you a ticket.”
