Valtteri Bottas is in doubt for Sunday’s race

Williams driver Valtteri Bottas is in doubt for tomorrow’s Australian Grand Prix after suffering back pain during qualifying.

The Finn underwent MRI scans in hospital this evening before returning to his accommodation.

The team says it will not know until the morning whether its driver will be cleared to race.

Bottas qualified sixth fastest, with his final Q3 effort hampered by a mistake at the exit of the final corner.

Team-mate Felipe Massa joked in the post-qualifying press conference that he had ‘won his category’ after scoring third behind the two Mercedes entries.

“Unfortunately towards the end of Q2 I started to feel a pain in my back,” Bottas explained.

“Under the circumstances I’m happy with sixth place, but as Felipe proved, this is not a true indication of our pace.

“Given the back complaint I had during the session, the team and I felt it sensible to get me checked out at the local hospital and we await their diagnosis.”
