Scott McLaughlin’s Volvo proved a scant 0.006s quicker than Rick Kelly’s Nissan in second practice at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide.

The 21-year-old put his S60 at the top of the order by recording a 1:21.37s best with seven of the 30 minutes remaining.

Practice 1 pace-setter Kelly set two quick laps in the dying stages; both times proving good enough for second place.

Nissan team-mate James Moffat ended up third, despite running off at Turn 11 during the closing minutes.

James Courtney was the quickest of the Holdens in fourth ahead of Shane van Gisbergen, David Reynolds and Chaz Mostert.

New Erebus recruit Ashley Walsh backed up his seventh place effort in the first session with the eighth fastest time.

Practice 2 again ran without stoppage, despite several drivers locking front tyres and running wide on the bumpy street course.

It was a tough session for Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport, whose drivers Nick Percat and Tim Blanchard ended up at the bottom of the order.

Percat completed just three laps before being sidelined with a starter motor issue, while Blanchard lost time early in the going with engine problems.

The third practice session of the day is scheduled for 1255 local time.
