Dunlop tyre preview: Plus Fitness Phillip Island 400

thumbThere is only one option for tyres at the Plus Fitness Phillip Island 400 meeting this weekend.

Teams will use the Dunlop Sport Maxx control tyre for the duration of the weekend.

The island is one of the hardest circuits on tyres in the world but the Sport Maxx control tyre is well up to the job.

The race format is a couple of 100km races on Saturday and a single 200km race on Sunday, which to my way of thinking, is the most meaningful.

Now that V8 Supercars have mandated a minimum tyre pressure, the teams that are a bit harder on tyres are found to be doing a bit of head scratching.

To my mind the Triple Eight Race Engineering cars have exceptional tyre life.

It is one of the many reasons why the Brisbane squad has gone through a sustained period of domination with Jamie Whincup on the brink of winning a standalone record sixth Championship title.
