Bernie Ecclestone has hinted that the double points rule for the final round of the Formula 1 season could be scrapped for the 2015 season.
The FIA elected to introduce the double points rule for this season’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix finale in a bid to ensure the championship fight would go down to the wire.
However, the decision has been met with widespread disapproval from fans and leading figures in motorsport.
In the lead up to this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, F1 boss Ecclestone has admitted the rule could be abolished as early as next year.
“Don’t know. Probably not,” said Ecclestone when asked if the double points system would remain in 2015.
“We can’t see whether it has worked, so it depends.
“It just seemed to me the right way to keep the championship open.
“Otherwise for the last three or four races, people are running in non-championship races.
“I wanted it to be for the last three races and then people would believe it was still possible for somebody else to win. But they all say I’m mad, so we won’t do it.”
Any change to the rules for next season would need to ratified at the FIA’s World Motorsport Council which is due to meet in December.
