Craig Lowndes topped Sunday morning qualifying

Craig Lowndes will be the last man out in the Top 10 Shootout after proving the fastest man in Race 22 qualifying at the Castrol Townsville 500.

The Red Bull Holden driver held the fastest time ahead of the final runs and, after a flurry of quicker efforts from his rivals, returned to the top with a 1:13.47s on his very last attempt.

Lowndes will at best start Race 22 from third place after being handed a two-place grid penalty following an incident on Saturday.

Jamie Whincup made it a Red Bull one-two ahead of the Shootout, with Shane van Gisbergen, Garth Tander, James Courtney and Nick Percat ensuring a Holden sweep of the top six.

Scott McLaughlin, Will Davison, Jason Bright and Chaz Mostert complete the Shootout field.

Championship leader Mark Winterbottom jumped from 13th to seventh with his last effort, but was subsequently dumped back to 12th as the times continued to tumble.

Tim Slade also narrowly missed out on the Shootout, ending up as the last of the Walkinshaw Holdens in 11th.

The Top 10 Shootout will get underway at 1205 local time.
