Jack Miller’s Moto3 championship lead has been cut to five points after rival Romano Fenati capitalised on a rare retirement from the Australian by taking victory in Mugello.

The Red Bull KTM rider, who started from second on the grid, had been in the lead of the race as it entered the closing stages.

However, on the final lap Miller fell taking Alex Marquez and Enea Bastianini with him. The incident is under investigation by Race Direction at the Italian circuit.

Miller’s crash allowed title rival Fenati to take victory from Isaac Vinales and polesitter Alex Rins.

Before the accident there had been just 1.5 seconds covering the top 13 riders as a battle for the spoils raged.

Maximum points for Fenati has slashed Miller’s championship lead to just five points ahead of the seventh round of the championship at Spain’s Barcelona on June 14-15.

Meanwhile, it has emerged Miller is on the verge of completing a deal to move to Moto2 for the 2015 season.

It is understood the Townsville teenager’s Moto2 destination could be confirmed at the Catalunya circuit later this month. comment policy
