State funeral announcement for Sir Jack Brabham

Queensland premier Campbell Newman has offered the family of Sir Jack Brabham a state funeral.

Brabham died at his home on the Gold Coast in the early hours of Monday morning aged 88.

The triple world F1 champion made Queensland his home in his retirement years where he spent his time with his second wife Lady Margaret.

“I’m thrilled the Queensland government has been kind enough to offer the family a state funeral,” Lady Margaret told Speedcafe.com

“I’m sure he would be so proud and it is an absolute fitting gesture for him, he deserves it.”

“He is so admired and loved by everybody. He did such a wonderful thing and what he achieved will never be done again.”

Queensland government officials will meet with Lady Margaret this week to go through the finer details of the arrangements.

Premier Newman said: “Like the name Bradman in cricket, or Phar Lap in horse racing, the name of Brabham and motorsport are synonymous.”

A date for the service is expected to be announced later this week that is expected to allow for eldest son Geoff and youngest David to travel back to Queensland from overseas.
