Marquez cruises to Texas victory
Marc Marquez swept to his second victory of the MotoGP season after a comfortable lights-to-flag ride at the Circuit of the Americas.
The Spaniard was untroubled throughout the encounter as he led home team-mate Dani Pedrosa to record a 1-2 finish for Honda.
The battle for third proved to be the highlight of the race with Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso coming through to eventually claim the final spot on the podium.
Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo briefly led the race courtesy of a mistimed jump start which resulted in a ride through penalty that dropped him to last at the start of lap 2.
Marquez wasted little time out in front as he opened up a second lead over Pedrosa in just three laps, while there was plenty of action behind.
Pramac Ducati’s Andrea Iannone held third but he was under pressure from a fast starting Cal Crutchlow, Stefan Bradl, Dovizioso and Valentino Rossi.
While Marquez and Pedrosa began to open up a comfortable lead at the front, Rossi moved up to fourth and looked set to challenge Iannone for third.
However, Rossi’s charge faltered and slowly he slipped down the order which allowed Bradl, Dovizioso and Bradley Smith to battle it out for third.
After a fast start, Crutchlow was forced into retirement with his Ducati suffering from a rear tyre issue.
At the front, Marquez produced another faultless performance as he recorded his second win of the season with a 4.5s advantage over Pedrosa.
As the race drew to a close Iannone lost his battle with Bradl but the German was unable to hold on to third, as Dovizioso’s late burst proved enough to earn him a podium finish.
Bradl finished in fourth just ahead of Smith, Pol Espargaro and Iannone.
Rossi took the chequered flag in eighth ahead of Aleix Espargaro, while Lorenzo rounded out the top 10.
Australia’s Broc Parkes, riding for Paul Bird Motorsport, retired from the race after just three laps.
MotoGP heads to Argentina on April 26-27 for Round 3 of the 2014 season.
