Turkey could be set to return to the Formula 1 calendar after reports an agreement in principle has been reached with the sport's new owners Liberty Media.
F1's new chairman Chase Carey met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Tuesday where the subject of Istanbul Park hosting an F1 race was discussed.
Istanbul Park track operator Vural Ak and the chief of country's motorsport governing body Serkan Yazici were present at the meeting.
While a contract is yet to be signed, Ak has revealed a deal is on the horizon.
“We had a meeting in Ankara earlier today with the President and Chase Carey from Liberty Media, whom I previously invited to Turkey personally before,” said Ak.
“All I can say at this point is that the meetings went really well and we agreed in principle (a return). Although the contract hasn't been signed yet.”
The circuit has been absent from the calendar since 2011 when a financial dispute ended its contract.
Turkey joined the F1 calendar in 2005 following the construction of the state-of-the-art Herman Tilke designed Istanbul Park circuit.
