Stewards confirm Lowndes, Kelly penalties
CAMS stewards have confirmed a grid penalty for Craig Lowndes and a points deduction for Todd Kelly following incidents in Race 22 of the V8 Supercars Championship at Ipswich.
Lowndes wil start two places lower than where he qualifies for Race 23 today after admitting to careless driving in an incident involving Mark Winterbottom and Fabian Coulthard on the opening lap.
Nissan Motosport co-owner and driver Todd Kelly meanwhile has been relieved of 25 points after admitting to the same charge following a hit on Chaz Mostert at Turn 6 on the final lap.
Mostert had been running 16th at the time of the incident but came home as the last of the lead lap runners in 23rd.
Kelly drops from 23rd to 25th in points following the penalty. The former Bathurst 1000 winner is now one place behind Mostert, who missed the first eight races of the season before joining Dick Johnson Racing at Barbagallo.
Kelly had been involved in an earlier collision with David Wall on the approach to Turn 6; a clash that was not investigated post-race.
On Saturday evening the 33-year-old had expressed his own disappointment with the driving standards in the mid-field.
“I’m trying to do the right thing out there all the time and the standard of driving is just average with some of these blokes,” he said.
“Again just being run off the track a few times and nerfed off and lost positions to end up where we did, so it’s a shame, because something needs to be done about it; the cars are definitely good enough to be up there.”
