Sydney teenager Josh Hunter is on the verge of victory in the 2012 Kumho V8 Touring Car Series after taking the win in Race 1 of the final round at Sandown.
The pole-sitter recovered from a poor start to arrest the lead from fellow Ford driver Tony Evangelou at the halfway mark of the 10 lap race.
Marcus Zukanovic charged through from the back of the 15 car field after mechanical problems in qualifying to take third on debut in the series driving his ex-HSV Dealer Team Commodore.
Front-row starter Morgan Haber and title contender Jim Pollicina rounded out the top five, with the latter’s position seeing the defict to Hunter stand at 60 points with just 100 remaining available across the two races tomorrow.
Sixth through 10th was filled by Justin Garioch, Matt Hansen, Bobby Jane (who ran as high as fourth on the opening lap before dropping back with fuel pump issues), Michael Hector and Ian Yeing, who took 10th from Maurie Pickering at the final corner.
Aaron Tebb’s HDT/Sydney Star Commodore was the only retirement while the Falcon of Shane Hunt and Commodore of Lyle Kearns both failed to take the start after pre-race clutch and engine problems respectively.
