Christian Klien looks set to compete in the Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour next month.
The former Formula One driver is poised to drive a Lotus Exige S GT4 in the once-around-the-clock event at the famous Mount Panorama circuit, partnering car owner Rob Thompson.
Thompson is currently searching for a third driver to complete the line-up.
Thompson met Klien while competing with Aston Martin in last year's Nurburgring 24 Hour event and says that the former Jaguar and Red Bull Racing F1 driver has expressed immense interest in making his mountain debut.
“I met him in Germany at the Nurburgring 24 Hour race, and like any professional driver, he puts himself out there for different gigs,” Thompson told Speedcafe.com.
“This is one that has come up through us meeting each other.”
Klien is a contracted driver to the Prodrive organisation and has spent the past year competing with the company's Aston Martin sportscar program. Through his Prodrive deal, the Austrian also landed the role alongside Paul Dumbrell in Ford Performance Racing's third entry at the Armor All Gold Coast 600 last year.
The Lotus Exige S GT4 car will compete with major backing from Thompson's own companies Queensland House and Land and Planbuild.
While the Lotus Exige will not be an outright contender, Thompson is hoping that Klien's influence will put his team in a strong position.
“Our expectation is to finish the race and see where we end up in our class,” he said.
“There's only going to be a handful of cars in our class, so we expect to be right up there, if we can finish.
“We only need the third driver now to make the whole package happen. We need that person to have a little bit of money but we also want someone with good experience.”
The Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour will be held on February 24-26.
