Paul Dumbrell has made a strong start to the Falken Tasmania Challenge, clocking the fastest time in opening practice.

With only the bottom 14 drivers in the championship standings permitted to compete in the first two 30 minute sessions, Dumbrell lapped the Symmons Plains circuit in 51.91s to secure the top spot.

A late effort saw James Courtney second fastest on 52.03s, while Todd Kelly, Steve Owen and Tony D’Alberto rounded out the top five.

The session was held under sunny skies, allowing Dumbrell to lap within 0.6s of Jamie Whincup’s practice lap record.
