Cameron McConville will drive a Lamborghini Gallardo LP560 in next year’s Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour at Mount Panorama.

McConville will drive the new-to-Australia sports car, teaming up with car owner Ted Huglin and a yet-to-be-confirmed third driver.

In the hands of Huglin, the Gallardo LP560 has competed in the Victorian state series, plus at the Bathurst Motor Festival, but is not eligible to compete in the Australian GT Championship until next year.

McConville says that the LP560 will be genuine contender for victory at Bathurst.

“Competing in an outright car was what really attracted me to it,” McConville told

“I jumped at this opportunity. Obviously, I’ve done the race with Holden in the R8. Holden was not officially going to have an entry next year, so for me, the chance to drive a Lamborghini around Bathurst was too hard to refuse.”

McConville says that Huglin, 75-years-young, only has eyes on winning the 12 Hour event.

“Even though I haven’t driven a Lambo around Bathurst, I’m looking forward to leading the brigade – I probably have the most experience around there,” McConville said.

“Ted is close to securing a good, reliable second driver who will make the line-up strong.

“Ted is definitely the elder statesmen of sports car racing, but by the same token, he is entitled to be there.

“He has a successful business, he owns the car. He is under no illusions that he’ll do the minimum drive time, but he definitely wants to go there and win.”

Audi recently confirmed it will return to Mount Panorama next year in an attempt to defend its one-two finish. McConville agrees that if his Lamborghini is anywhere near the Audis during the race, they’ll be in with a great chance.

“Those teams coming from Europe like Audi, they are quick and they have a lot of experience in these type of races,” he said.

“I hope that I can bring my endurance experience and we can just drive around all day and try and get on the podium. That’s Ted’s aim and that’s what we want achieve.”

The 2012 Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour will be held on February 24-26.
