Stewart-Haas Racing’s Ryan Newman has continued his recent run of strong oval track form by taking pole position for the IRWIN Tools Night Race at Bristol.

On a track where the first 27 cars were separated by less than 0.2s, Newman beat Carl Edwards to pole by a mere 0.02s.

Matt Kenseth, Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin were next, while Jamie McMurray, Paul Menard, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano and Kurt Busch rounded out the top 10.

Australian Marcos Ambrose will line-up 11th.

Points leader Kyle Busch could manage only 23rd fastest, while Newman’s team-mate Tony Stewart fared even worse – relying on his championship position to qualify for the race after setting the slowest qualifying time among the 46 cars present.
