Australian Speedway Grand Prix ace Leigh Adams has suffered suspected spinal injuries after a serious accident during unofficial practice for the Finke Desert Race today.

According to reports, the 10-times Australian champion was transported by air from Alice Springs to Adelaide Hospital.

Further details on the accident have yet to be released.

Adams was aboard his bike when the accident occurred.

Adams, originally from Mildura, retired from full-time competition at the end of last season.

Regarded as Australia’s premier annual off-road event, the Tattersals Finke Desert Race covers a 226km course from Alice Springs to Finke this coming Sunday  followed by the return leg on Monday.
