Jamie Whincup has snatched pole position for Race 5 of the V8 Supercars Championship at Hamilton’s street circuit.

After an entertaining session on a drying circuit, the TeamVodafone driver edged out Jim Beam Racing Falcon of Steve Johnson.

Jack Daniel’s Racing’s Rick Kelly will start from third ahead of Shane van Gisbergen, who got the local spectators heart’s racing when he topped the second sector during his lap. His time was eventually good enough for a second-row start.

Craig Lowndes (TeamVodafone), Garth Tander (Toll Holden Racing Team), David Reynolds (Stratco Racing) and Greg Murphy (Pepsi Max Crew) will start from fifth to eighth respectively.

Wilson Security Racing’s Tony D’Alberto missed his braking marker at Turn 2, slipping up the escape road and destroying his chances of a higher grid place.

Dean Fiore’s time was disallowed after he triggered the final part of the Turn 4 chicane, dropping him to 10th. Had he kept his time and not been penalised, he would have started near the top five …
