Shane van Gisbergen will start this evening’s V8 Supercars race from 12th position, after being stripped of his Race 1 podium.

The SP Tools Falcon driver finished third behind Jamie Whincup and Garth Tander yesterday, but has since been penalised for contact with Craig Lowndes at Turn 14 early in the race.

The incident saw pole-sitter Lowndes pit with damage to the front-right corner of his TeamVodafone Commodore.

Van Gisbergen was handed a 40 second time penalty, which drops him to 12th in yesterday’s race result.

The Kiwi had been leading the Albert Park 400 points standings after Qualifying and Race 1.

Jamie Whincup now assumes the points lead from Rick Kelly.

Yesterday’s amended race result now sees Alex Davison in the IRWIN Falcon classified in third place, ahead of Rick Kelly (Jack Daniel’s Racing) and Lee Holdsworth (Fujitsu Rcaing).

The stewards also handed down a careless driving penalty to Todd Kelly – after the Jack Daniel’s Commodore driver made heavy contact with the rear of Jason Bargwanna’s BOC entry in Race 2 at the Clipsal 5o0.

Kelly has been relieved of 25 championship points, dropping him from 21st to 24th in the standings.
