Third-generation racer Matthew Brabham led an invasion of karting graduates during the opening round of the Victorian State Championship at Phillip Island at the weekend.

Driving the CAMS Rising Star/Minda Motorsport Spectrum Brabham qualified third fastest on Saturday before recording a third and fifth placing in the opening two 10-lap encounters.

After a race long battle with fellow karting graduates Mathew Hart, Garry Jacobsen and Jesse Fenech in the final race it was Brabham who came out on top by the narrowest of margins.

“It was an awesome day of racing, in all the races you never knew who was going to win until the flag fell, but the most important race is the last one as it counts for more points in the Championship and it was a very special feeling for me to get my first win,” said Brabham.

Courtesy of his success across the weekend Brabham now takes a five point lead into the next round of the championship to be held at Sandown on May 23.
