Modest field set for inaugural V8 Touring Car ‘heritage round’

A modest field of seven cars will line-up for the Kumho V8 Touring Car class’ inaugural ‘heritage round’ with the Shannons Nationals at Wakefield Park this weekend.

The non-points scoring event is being held for EB-AU model Ford Falcon and VP-VX model Holden Commodore V8 Supercars, excluding the newer  equipment that currently dominates the KV8TC Series.

Andy Cantrell’s ex-Glenn Seton Racing Falcon EL and Darrin Renouf’s ex-Phoenix Racing Commodore VS are the two oldest cars set to make an appearance.

A pair of ex-Castrol Perkins Racing Commodore VTs (Steve Ingwerson and Sean Fardell) are also entered, while the line-up is completed by the Falcon AUs of Chris Delfsma (ex-Bastian Motorsport), Brad Wimpenny (ex-Longhurst Racing) and Aaron Tebb (ex-Prancing Horse Racing).

Shannons Nationals series director Rob Curkpatrick says that, despite this weekend’s small turnout, he’s confident that the heritage round concept can be a successful one.

“It took some time for the Kumho V8 Touring Car series to grow, but it is now healthy and very competitive,” he said.

“This is a stepping stone towards bigger things but we intend on growing and building a V8-based heritage round on the Shannons Nationals program.

“The initial response has been positive and there are plenty of people keen to see it grow. We think it can become a fantastic part of the series and also in recognising the heritage of Australia’s V8 Touring Car history.”

Also competing at the Shannons Nationals event this weekend will be Kerrick Sports Sedan Naitional Series, Dial Before You Dig Australian Saloon Car Series, Australian Commodore Cup Series and Hi-Tec Oils Australian Swift Racing Series.

The 10 car Sports Sedan field will feature a three-way battle for the title between former series winners Kerry Baily (Aston Martin DBR9), Darren Hossack (Audi A4) and Tony Ricciardello (Alfa GTV).

Just 46 points separate the three contenders heading into the weekend, where a total of 135 still up for grabs.

Meanwhile, Simon Tabinor is in the box seat to wrap the Saloon Car crown, entering this weekend’s penultimate event with a 121 point advantage over fellow Holden driver Josh Kean.
