Johnson on pole for Chase kick-off in Chicago

Jimmie Johnson will start the first race of the 2012 Chase for the Sprint Cup from pole position after clocking the fastest time around Chicagoland Speedway in qualifying.

Johnson towards the middle of the 47 car line-up, setting a 29.53s lap that would not be beaten by the 24 contenders that followed.

Richard Petty Motorsports’ Aric Almirola came closest, missing out on a second pole for the year by just 0.037s.

Matt Kenseth, Dale Earnhardt Jr and Carl Edwards completed the top five, although Earnhardt Jr will be forced to start the race from the rear of the field after his Hendrick Chevrolet underwent a post-qualifying engine change.

For team-mate Johnson, a 27th career pole is a perfect start to his assault on a sixth title.

“It’s a great start obviously for the weekend, track position is so important and pit road is as everyone knows,” he said.

“We did everything good today, which I’m excited about. We’ve been saying all along that we’re ready for this Chase to start and to go out and prove it today was a step in the right direction.”

Australian Marcos Ambrose meanwhile will start his second race alongside crew chief Mike Ford from 17th position.
