Maverick Viñales has pipped Marc Marquez by 0.002s in the first in-season test of the MotoGP season at Jerez.
Viñales clocked a 1:38.635s during morning running as the Movistar Yamaha team worked on chassis development and tyre testing. Team-mate Valentino Rossi was a distant 21st.
The two Repsol Hondas were second- and third-fastest, Dani Pedrosa 0.081s off the fastest lap of the day, as they tested a new exhaust which LCR’s Cal Crutchlow had used during the grand prix weekend.
Aleix Espargaro on his Gresini Aprilia was fourth-fastest ahead of the factory Ducatis of Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo.
Jack Miller finished the day 11th, one position ahead of Marc VDS Honda team-mate Tito Rabat.
Teams also tested the stiffer construction front Michelin tyre in both hard and medium compounds.
The next round of the season is the French Grand Prix from May 19-21.
