Jamie Whincup remained non-plussed when quizzed about his thoughts on the late race crash of Shane van Gisbergen in a hectic Bathurst 12 Hour.
Whincup was in control of the race in the Maranello Motorsport Ferrari 488 when Shane van Gisbergen, who had second place at his mercy, pushed beyond the limit and crashed his factory-supported STM Mercedes into the wall.
When asked whether he had any compassion for his Red Bull Holden Racing Team Supercars team-mate, Whincup succinctly replied; ‘that’s racing.’
“He was aggressive all race so sometimes when you are that aggressive things can go wrong,” Whincup told Speedcafe.com.
“It’s still part of the strategy. You win a lot of races like that but sometimes you don’t.”
Earlier Whincup and van Gisbergen had a fierce fight when the former, on fresher tyres, eventually slipped past the Mercedes driver going into the Chase.
“It’s hard and fair,” Whincup said after he was forced to put his right-hand wheels onto the dirt in the contest.
“I give it back. It’s what we do.
“At the end of the day people pay good money to watch. They don’t want a procession.
“As long as the officials stay out of it like they mostly do, it’s game on.
“Sometimes they get involved and sometimes you don’t step on top of the podium.”
