An auction to help the family of Justin Wilson is off to a strong start less than 24 hours after it went live on eBay.
Organiser Graham Rahal hopes the auction which features a collection of helmets donated by IndyCar drivers can raise $1 million.
The Graham Rahal Foundation has teamed up with eBay and online auction facilitator Auction Cause.
With eBay's direct involvement, transaction fees will be waived with all proceeds going toward the Wilson Children's Fund to benefit Wilson's widow, Julia and daughters Jane, 7, and five-year-old Jessica.
Wilson died in hospital a day after being struck in the head by debris from a separate accident at Pocono on August 24.
“Justin was not just an incredible driver, he was an incredible person, team-mate and friend,” Graham Rahal said.
“Through this auction, I hope we can raise as much money as possible to help provide for his wife (Julia), Jane and Jessica.”
Rahal's helmet from the season-ending Sonoma race recently pre-sold for $50,000 (70,100 AUD), while the helmet of Wilson's Andretti Autosport team-mate Ryan Hunter-Reay pre-sold for $24,000 ($33,600) at a charity event during the race weekend.
The current group of helmets is available for bid through 9pm (US Eastern Time) on September 24.
Another five groups of racing and other one-of-a-kind memorabilia will follow until the auction's conclusion October 26.
In addition to IndyCar memorabilia, drivers and teams from Formula 1, NASCAR, World Endurance Championship, Global Rallycross and the United SportsCar Championship have donated items for auction.
Non-racing items include a microphone autographed by The Who's Roger Daltrey from the iconic rock group's concert this year at the Glastonbury Festival in England and an original painting of Wilson's car by artist Bill Patterson.
