David Murcott picked up his second win of the World Series Sprintcars season in round four at Victoria’s Avalon Speedway.
Having started from the second row, The Dave Horrell Motorsport driver drove a patient race behind early pacesetters Jamie Veal and James McFadden.
The 35 lap final soon developed into a battle between Veal and McFadden, while Murcott conserved his tyres behind.
With eight laps remaining Murcott pounced on the battling leaders to move to the head of the pack before powering to the chequered flag.
Veal held on to finish second while McFadden claimed the final place on the podium in third.
“I just had to be patient, because I knew that the track was going to take rubber and there was a chance that if I kept the tyres, I may be able to sneak up on the boys,” said Murcott.
“I was totally relying on them to make a mistake which they don’t do very often, but they did at the same time so we pounced and got by them.”
Brad Keller came home in fourth ahead of American Kyle Hirst and Luke Dillon, while eight-time champion Brooke Tatnell finished in eighth spot.
Murcott’s second World Series Sprintcars victory of the season, having claimed the opener in Adelaide, moved him to fifth in the championship standings 73 points adrift of points leader Hirst.
The championship heads to Warrnambool, Victoria for the fifth round on January 1, which also acts as the final race of the Speedweek Series. The winner of the Speedweek Series will pocket a $10,000 prize fund.
Elsewhere, Max Dumesny clinched the New South Wales Sprinter title with victory at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway. The victory was his 45th at the circuit and third NSW title.
