Austria's Red Bull Ring is set to host top level motorcycle racing with MotoGP confirming plans to hold a round at the venue from 2016.
MotoGP has confirmed the category's management and Red Bull Ring owner Dietrich Mateschitz have agreed initial terms to host a round of the world championship from as early as 2016.
This year the Spielberg circuit returned to the Formula 1 calendar following an 11-year hiatus.
The venue last hosted premier class motorcycle racing in 1997, which saw five-time world champion Mick Doohan claim victory.
“Red Bull's Dietrich Mateschitz and Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta have reached an agreement which will see MotoGP return to Austria as early as 2016, with the race to be staged at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg,” read a statement from MotoGP.
“Pending all of the necessary official approvals for the Red Bull Ring, Dorna will propose the inclusion of the Grand Prix to the FIM to be scheduled in the 2016 season.”
